The Queen and the Princess Cities

Forgive my absence over the weekend. I went to visit the Queen. Cebu City. The Queen City of the South. That title used to sit on Iloilo’s throne, but after some awful period of governance and mismanagement of the city, the economy of Iloilo plummeted and the rest kind of collapsed. I’m talking about a long time ago and

yes, some public servants are doing their best to rebuild Iloilo and make it the next big thing but in the meantime, we are contented with the title “Princess.” I like Cebu City. I like its orderliness, the sense of proper zoning, I like the oozing regionalism of its people, I like the sense of pride that they have about their province, I like the availability of almost everything. It is a key metropolis that clones its own progress. The businesses are competitive, the infrastructure are definitive of what the city has achieved so far. But in terms of food, I’m sorry, but I’d have to

bet on Iloilo for that.

My favorite place to shop in Cebu: Ayala Center

I wish Iloilo will have Gelatissimo one of these days. Sigh.

As tourists in the famous Magellan's Cross with my students during our educational tour of Cebu

Cebu is also very efficient in servicing tourists. Their Tourism programs are strong it is clear that they want Cebu to be a major tourist destination. I think Iloilo needs this kind of focus that should come from the appointed persons whose job is to uplift the tourism aspect in Iloilo. We have so much to offer for Iloilo tourism industry but there seems to be a lack of initiative to work on these tourism assets and when you inquire about their plans, they tell you ‘we don’t have budget.’ A sad thing, really. But I’m sure there is a way to make things happen if we are committed enough, right? Way to go, Queen Cebu. Looking forward to seeing you again in August.
