Ilonggos who have ideas they would want to turn to reality will have a chance to pitch their ideas this fall.

Startup Weekend Iloilo 2 will take place on September 2 to 4 at the University of the Philippines Visayas – Iloilo City campus. Co-Organizer Kyra Ann Dianon said that the event is aimed at creating an environment for Ilonggos to network and build new ideas. “We want to help inspire Ilonggos to build creative, and innovative solutions to local problems,” Dianon said. “This is one of the many steps to build a great startup scene locally.”

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour competition where developers, designers, marketers, technopreneurs, and venture capitalists come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startup businesses.

Startup Weekend is a part of US based Techstars company, and the event is a non-profit organization sponsored by Google, Coca-Cola, and Eventbrite.  2900 events have been held in 150 countries around the world. In the Philippines, it has been held in Manila, Cebu, Bohol, and Davao.

Last year, 40 participants pitched 7 business ideas. The top three teams also participated in the 2016 Global Startup Battle. Participants received mentorship from business owners and pitched their ideas to a panel of five judges.

As part of the overall efforts to promote the growth of the Philippine startup ecosystem, Startup Weekend Iloilo is partnering with Cebu-based TechTalks organization. Among the people who will be assisting the organizers is Ashley Uy, event facilitator of last year’s event and organizer of Startup Weekend Bohol. “Participants were eager and ready to learn, and were fully able to apply their mentors’ suggestions during their final presentation on Sunday night. The quality of work produced at the end by the seven teams were concise, well thought out, and had a lot of spirit and passion despite the challenges they faced throughout the event,” Uy said about last year’s event.

This year, the organizing team aims to continue to find those within the province who have ideas that could turn into a business. “The upcoming September event follows Iloilo’s pioneering Startup Weekend held at the University of the Philippines last November supported by the local Iloilo startup community and sponsors.” Uy said.

“We want to extend an invite to anyone within the community with a great idea. The event is open to professionals and students.” Dianon said. Dianon also added that the organizers are also open to partnering with local businesses. “It takes a community to build a great startup scene, and we welcome any interested local partners to turn the dreams of Ilonggos to reality.”

The other members of the organizing team include Jeffrey Teruel, and John Lorenz Belanio.

Registration fees are 1000PHP for general admission and 700PHP for students. Interested participants can register at Dojo 8 Coworking Space along General Luna Street.
