Leading Events in Iloilo the Google Way

May 4, 2014 by

This is a long overdue announcement, but since our local Google family is growing, it is with excitement that I inform you my dear reader that I am a part of one of the Google Communities called the Google Educators Group (GEG). I have been appointed as the GEG Iloilo Chapter Leader last November and have been slowly working our way through establishing the community in our homebase, Iloilo. This is yet another feather on my cap that I am so truly proud of. I mean, come on. This is Google we’re talking about. So what do I do in GEG? Primarily, the goal is to bring together teachers in Iloilo to collaborate and learn how to better our teaching using technology in the classrooms (and beyond). I know right? The real way to define this job can be hashtagged #excitement.

I was fortunate enough to be introduced to Google through my friend Yen de Felipe, who has been serving as the Iloilo Chapter Manager for Google Business Group (GBG). This community has been holding events in Iloilo successfully and w’re proud to say that the network of business professionals is growing faster than ever. Google makes this happen with its support. As of late, GBG has established another arm specifically for women who are engaged in business and fostering their fellowship comes the Women on the Web community under GBG. This community is led by Ms Louella Gurrea. If you’re interested in being part of this group for super informative events/workshops/seminars just look up GBG Iloilo on Google+ and find out the line up of events coming to your side of town very soon.

As for the GEG community of teachers, we have launched the chapter last February 18th and have invited a few teachers representing the different sectors of education: private, public, basic education and higher education. It was basically a getting-to-know you event and an introduction of what GEG is all about. But the bigger events are yet to come and we are gearing up for a major workshop entitled Google Teachers’ Workshop in Iloilo this coming June 6 and 7. This is made possible in partnership with the University of Iloilo (UI-PHINMA) as our host university. We are going to open our registration online very very soon for limited slots, so if you are a teacher and you wish to be part of this exciting and educational gig, might as well start by registering for the workshop. Just add us in your  Google+ circle (by clicking this link) or by following us on Facebook through this link.

The most recent addition to the family is making history in the formation of Google Communities in Iloilo. They have been selected to be the first two Google Student Ambassadors (GSA) in Iloilo. This is the first batch of GSA from Iloilo, so the Google Communities all over the country are just as excited as we are in seeing these kids develop the sense of collaboration and community among the different schools/universities using Google technology and products. Meet our new GSAs from Iloilo, Jasper Ruby Vijar and Dan Rebuelta (both from UP Visayas). They will be leading the troop of young learners in Iloilo in maximizing the awesome potentials of technology. We’re all looking forward to their events!
